Quick Guide to Plants for Living Aquariums
Plants are not decoration: they are living infrastructure.
In a living aquarium, plants are not there only to make the aquarium look more natural. They have a real function: they consume nutrients, occupy biological space, compete with algae, provide refuge, stabilize the environment, and help the system process the load that enters it.
An aquarium with functioning plants does not depend only on the filter, water changes, or corrective products. Part of the work is distributed inside the system itself.
That is why, in MACI, the question is not only:
Which plants look nice?
The important question is:
Which plants can actually work in this aquarium?
The Main Idea
You do not need to build a jungle or buy difficult plants to have a living aquarium.
You need plants that:
- match your light
- tolerate your water
- have time to root or attach
- show real growth
- participate in nutrient uptake
- are not being moved, replaced, or disturbed every few days
A plant that survives but barely grows helps very little. A plant that grows, even slowly, is already part of the biological circuit of the aquarium.
Do Not Start with Difficult Plants
One of the most common mistakes is choosing plants by appearance before understanding the aquarium.
You see a spectacular aquarium online, buy red plants, carpeting plants, or demanding species, place them in a young tank with little stability and limited margin, and then it seems that “plants are difficult”.
Very often they are not difficult. They simply did not fit that setup.
To begin, it is better to choose resistant, adaptable plants with margin.
Good Plants to Start With
Anubias
Resistant, slow, and easy. The rhizome should not be buried under the substrate. They work better attached to wood, rock, or decoration.
They do not consume as much as a fast-growing plant, but they add stability, colonizable surface, and structure.
Java Fern
Another tough and useful plant. It should also be attached, not buried like a classic rooted plant.
It tolerates simple setups and does not require brutal light.
Cryptocorynes
Very useful for living aquariums. They may melt at first when their environment changes, but that does not necessarily mean they are dead. Many recover from the root if the aquarium is left stable.
They are good substrate plants for calm systems.
Vallisneria
It can colonize the background and create a lot of structure. If it adapts, it can grow strongly and help the aquarium feel alive.
It is better not to move it constantly.
Hygrophila
An easy stem plant, useful for nutrient uptake and visible growth. If the light supports it, it usually responds well.
It is a good plant for learning whether the aquarium has enough energy available.
Limnophila
Another very useful stem plant. It grows quickly in good conditions and helps consume load.
It can work as an indicator plant: if it stops, stretches poorly, or deteriorates, something in the system is not supporting it.
Floating Plants
Very useful, but they should be used with criteria. They consume nutrients, provide refuge, and create shade, but if they cover the whole surface they can block too much light from the plants below.
They work well when controlled, not when they are allowed to block everything.
Plants to Leave for Later
These are not forbidden plants, but they are not the best first decision if you want a simple aquarium:
- demanding carpeting plants
- intense red plants
- species that need a lot of light
- plants that depend on stable CO₂
- very compact advanced aquascaping layouts
- delicate plants in newly set up aquariums
You can get there, but you do not need to begin there.
First build an aquarium capable of supporting easy plants. Later, you can ask more from it.
Slow-Growing and Fast-Growing Plants
They do not all perform the same function.
Slow plants, such as Anubias, ferns, and many Cryptocorynes, provide structure, surface, refuge, and continuity. They are very useful, but they do not consume nutrients at the same rhythm as a large mass of fast stems or floating plants.
Fast plants, such as Hygrophila, Limnophila, simple Rotala species, or floaters, help capture nutrients more actively because they grow faster.
For an easy aquarium, the ideal is not to choose only one category, but to combine:
- resistant structural plants
- some faster-growing plants
- enough plant mass from the beginning
- species compatible with the real light you have
The Mistake of Adding “Four Plants” and Expecting Them to Do Everything
Many people add two or three small plants and expect the aquarium to behave like a mature planted system.
It does not work like that.
A newly bought plant is not yet strong infrastructure. It has to adapt, root, produce new leaves, and start growing in your water, with your light and your load.
At the beginning, the aquarium needs margin. If there are few stems, little root structure, little plant mass, and many fish too soon, the plants cannot compensate for excess load.
This is not about filling the aquarium without criteria. It is about understanding that plant mass matters.
Plants Need Stability
A plant can deteriorate because of too little light, too few nutrients, too much shade, poor adaptation, or constant changes.
But there is one very common mistake: touching too much.
Moving plants every week, uprooting them, pruning before they adapt, disturbing the substrate constantly, or changing light and fertilization every few days makes it impossible to know what is happening.
Plants need time to respond.
In a living aquarium, observing is also a form of action.
Old Leaves, New Leaves, and Adaptation
When a plant enters a new aquarium, it may lose old leaves. This is common, especially if it was grown emersed or if the water, light, or nutrients change a lot.
Do not look only at the old leaf.
Look for:
- new shoots
- new roots
- active stems
- healthy young leaves
- growth, even if slow
A plant adapting can look worse before it looks better.
The real problem appears when there is no new growth, the base rots, new leaves come out weak, or deterioration keeps advancing without signs of recovery.
Plants and Algae
Plants do not magically eliminate algae. But healthy, growing plants reduce the margin that algae can take advantage of.
The problem is that plants need minimum conditions. If you have light, nutrients, and load, but the plants do not grow, algae may occupy that space before they do.
So when algae appear, do not ask only:
Which product should I use?
Ask first:
Are my plants actually growing?
If they are not growing, the aquarium is missing a key part of its internal capacity.
Plants and Substrate
Not all plants depend on the substrate in the same way.
Some feed heavily through the roots, such as many Cryptocorynes, Echinodorus, or Vallisneria. Others can live attached to wood or rock, such as Anubias and Java fern. Floating plants do not need the bottom at all.
This means you do not always need the most expensive substrate to keep plants. But you do need to understand which plant you are using and how it feeds.
An aquarium with simple sand can have functional plants if species, light, and load are chosen well. An aquarium with expensive substrate can fail if light, stability, or design do not support it.
Plants and Fish
Plants also change how fish live.
They provide refuge, resting areas, visual limits, shade, territories, and safety. Many fish show calmer and more natural behavior when they are not exposed in an empty tank.
Plants also help the aquarium avoid depending only on human cleaning. They trap particles, colonize surfaces, feed biofilm, and create areas where small life can organize itself.
This does not mean abandoning the aquarium. It means giving it living structure.
What to Buy If You Are Starting from Zero
For a simple first living aquarium, a sensible combination could be:
- one or two rhizome plants, such as Anubias or Java fern
- several Cryptocorynes for the background or midground
- an easy stem plant, such as Hygrophila or Limnophila
- some floating plants if you can control them so they do not block all the light
- enough initial quantity so the aquarium is not a bare tank with three loose leaves
You do not need rare species. You need plants that can work in your aquarium.
Signs That Plants Are Doing Well
You are on the right path if you see:
- new leaves
- new roots
- stems that do not melt away
- stable color
- progressive growth
- fewer bare areas
- floaters multiplying without blocking everything
- plants recovering after an adaptation phase
The most important sign is not that the aquarium looks perfect from day one.
The important sign is a trend of growth.
Signs That Something Is Not Supporting Them
Review the system if you see:
- plants stopped for weeks
- new leaves deformed or very weak
- stems melting from the base
- transparent leaves
- plants stretching too much toward the light
- constant loss of lower leaves
- yellowing or shrinking floaters
- algae advancing while plants do not grow
It does not mean you have to dismantle everything. It means you should review light, nutrients, load, circulation, substrate, adaptation, and stability.

Before buying a plant, ask yourself:
Does this plant fit my light, my water, my substrate, and my real way of caring for the aquarium?
If the answer is no, it is not a bad plant. It is a bad choice for that aquarium at that moment.
